PROBLEM OF STRESS AT WORK
There is a recognized and growing problem in the
Unites States. The rate of change in the workplace,
the faster pace of work and information, the constant
flow of information on a 24/7 basis, and people
doing more with less combine to form an incubator
for stress in the workplace.
The costs and consequences of stress to business
are significant and are on the rise. A third of
workers are overworked and overstressed and experiencing
some form of burnout. Over 50% of absenteeism,
accounting for over 500,000 days of missed work
annually, is attributed to stress. Job stress
costs billions every year because of errors, absenteeism,
and diminished productivity. Seventy-five percent
of doctor visits are for stress-related problems.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
(FAQs)
What is Stress?
The stress response occurs when a person is confronted
with danger or demand from the environment. The
stress reaction is a response of the nervous system.
In essence, a stress response occurs when there
is a perception of danger, demand or threat. The
body and nervous system spring into an emergency
mode. The adrenal glands release adrenaline. Heart
rate and blood pressure increase. Digestion slows.
The brain releases endorphins which act as pain
killers.
With a major stressor, this wired-in emergency
response automatically happens. This protective,
survival response is sometimes referred to as
the "fight or flight response." The phrase means
that the body is geared up into a high state of
activation prepared to fight against the threat
or to flee from it.
Can the seminars or training sessions
be recorded?

How is this training on stress management
different from other stress management training
programs?
Often in training on stress you learn about what
stress is, triggers for stress, and key stressors.

Who are stress thrivers?
Certain people can experience numerous life changes
and stressful life experience without negative
consequences. These individuals seem to dance
through stressful periods. They not only navigate
the stressful times well, they thrive on stress.
These are the people who have resiliency to stress.
They are referred to as stress hardy or stress
thrivers.
Others can learn beneficial lessons from those
who thrive in conditions of stress. The lessons
from those who thrive in a whirlwind of stress
and change help others deal with our world of
rapid change and high demand.
What is stress resilience?
Stress resilience is the ability to deal
with stressful situations successfully. The greater
your stress resilience, the greater your ability
to handle stressful events.
You can think of stress resilience as being like
stress fitness. With stress resilience you can
experience stressful events without the wear and
tear that pressures and demands can sometimes
bring. People demonstrate stress resilience when
they respond to demanding situations with the
"right" level of energy and activation to meet
the demand but without the negative signs of distress,
such as worry and anxiety. Individuals with stress
resilience are effective in stressful conditions.

In a broad context, stress management is part
of health promotion. Strategies in health promotion
include stress management, nutrition, and exercise.
Stress management is the psychological part of
health promotion.
Stress management involves learning how to regulate
the stress response in the body. Typically, the
learning process with stress management begins
with general information about stress, what it
is and how it works. Then there is an examination
of the key stressors that people deal with in
their lives in general as well as in their workplace.
The next step involves looking at methods that
are used to deal with stress, including an assessment
of the effectiveness of these methods. This information
about stressors and current methods people are
using to deal with them is supplemented with training
to develop practices and healthy behaviors to
deal with stress effectively.
What are negative consequences of too
much stress?
Experiencing stress over prolonged periods of
time can lead to detrimental consequences. Chronic
stress can be harmful physically to general health,
to a sense of well-being, and can set the stage
for stress-related problems, such as headaches,
allergic reactions, sleeping problems, nervousness,
anxiety, aches and pains, and depression, heart
problems.
Prolonged stress can overtax the body which can
result in lowering resistance and depressing the
action of the immune system. The result is an
increased risk of a major disease, cancer, stroke
or heart disease.
What are the benefits of stress management?
When people learn to manage stress, they can improve
their health status. With reduced stress, individuals
can experience greater enjoyment and well-being,
healthier mental/emotional states, more positive
moods, and higher productiveness and effectiveness.
Including stress management in your life has
